The Different Tattoo Styles

The Classic Americana

This is the 'Old School' type of tattoo it uses very similar and limited colours which are outlined in black bold ink. If this style of tattoo is looked after well after being done it usually will last a very long time without having to be touched up.  This style became very popular from the "Sailor Jerry" in the 1930s. These tattoos usually are fierce animals, birds (eagles, sparrows, swallows), roses, daggers, cherries, hearts etc.

New School

The new school tattoos are often called a 'comic book on your body' this is because they use free styling and very unique/unusual patterns and ideas that have not been used before. They are very different to the traditional 'Old School' tattoos as they use very vivid colours. The tattoos usually included fantasy, comical animals, graffiti, sea creatures or are hip hop themed.

Black and Grey

Black and grey tattoos are done with different shades of grey to make the image. It is apparently originated from prisons where inmates had very little access to coloured ink. This is done by watering down the black ink. It is usually done using a single needle. The tattoo artist might sometimes use white ink to smooth out the sharpness between the different grey and black shades or to highlight the tattoo .
