  1. You first of all need a full secondary level education.
  2.  You then need to be a very skilled artist and be very good using colours and detail. You will need to present a tattoo parlour with a portfolio of drawings which should include your best drawings and pictures to prove you have the skill to actually be a tattoo artist. You should also be doing art classes or have been in an art college or school.
  3. You then need to do an apprenticeship with a tattoo artist for around three years. During this you will work alongside a tattoo artist and they will teach how to design tattoos, work a tattoo machine, use and sterilise all of the equipment and learn about different skin infections and how to prevent them.

Different Tattoo Needles

There are hundreds of  different types of tattoo needles but these are the four main ones. There are many different diameters in tattoo needles the main ones are 12, 10, 8 and 6. The number on a needle tells you how many needles there are together eg. 7RL there are 7 needles.

Round Tattoo Needles

They are needles that have circles tightly compacted together at the bottom of the needle this makes it very good for  small lines and very detailed work . These needles are often called 'loose needles' this is because they have a lot of flexibility in how thick the artist, wants the tattoo to be. Tattoo artists often use round needles for shading in tattoos also. Round needles are nicknamed 'RL'.

Flat Needles

These needles are crafted as a straight steel line formation. They are the most popular needles as they bring more ink to the skin, than any other needle. This also means that the lines are very dark and defined. Flat needles are nicknamed 'FL' which is a flat liner and 'FS' which is a flat shader or simply just flat with is 'F'.

Magnum Needles

Magnum needles are used for mostly shading in tattoos. They have a much longer taper (the point length on the needle) than other needles and they deliver alot more ink.  The needles are put in a 'weave like' formation and there are three different types of magnum needles. The weaved magnum, the stacked magnum and the round magnum.
